BLUEBELL FAIRY

This lovely Bluebell Fairy would be a your home's tiny friend)

MATERIALS:

Cotton crochet thread (10 gr/87m ~ 1 oz/ 267 yd )

Beige

Light lilac

Dark lilac

Green

Light yellow (a little bit)

Embroidery floss for the face:

Dark brown (for eyes)

Reddish brown (for mouth)

Hook 0.9 mm(or 1mm) (US 12 – UK 6)

Thin wire 0,2-0,3 mm (~ 0,01 in)

Please read this instruction attentively before starting your project!

This project is easy to crochet but it takes good skills in thorough and neat sewing

while assembling the pieces.

If you use materials mentioned above, you would result in a doll 6 cm(2,4 in) high. If

you use a thicker yarn, you would get a higher doll that would need longer arms and

longer hair.

All pieces are crocheted in continuous rounds (except a peaks). For beginning, you

should make chain of 2; then make some single crochet stitches in the first chain

stitch. (Another way of beginning is to start with a magic ring, if you more like this

method.) Finish work with a slip stitch.

Crochet stitches used:

– chain stitch

– slip stitch

– half double crochet for US (half treble crochet for UK)

– single crochet for US (double crochet stitch for UK)

– double crochet for US (treble crochet for UK)

– treble crochet for US (double treble crochet for UK)

Crochet Key:

sts – stitches

ch – chain stitch

sl st – slip stitch

hdc – half double crochet

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

inc – increase: 2 sc in 1 stitch.

dec – decrease – How it does: insert the hook into the next stitch and thread over.

Pull a loop through so that there are now 2 loops on the hook. Insert the hook into

the next stitch and thread over. Pull a loop through so that there are now 3 loops on

the hook. Thread over again and pull the loop of thread through all 3 loops on the

hook.

There are diagrams and keys below for crocheting the flowers.

And now let's get started!

HEAD

Beige thread.

Round 1: 2 ch and 6 sc into first ch (6 sts)

R2: (inc) X 6 (12 sts)

R3: (1sc,inc) X 6 (18 sts)

R4: (2sc,inc) X 6 (24 sts)

R5-11 (7 rounds): sc around (24 sts)

R12: (2sc, dec) X 6 (18 sts)

R13: (1sc, dec) X 6 (12 sts)

R14: (dec) X 6 (6 sts)

R15: decrease and close the hole with a slip stitch.

Stuff the head tightly with filler after round 13. It is easier to push it inside with ends

of the scissors. (I got a 2cm (0,8 in) high doll's head)

ADVICE: Pull the initial thread end out between rounds 2 and 3, it would serve as the

marker and help you to count the rounds. It works good for all pieces. One more

thing here – when the piece becomes voluminous it is a good idea to fold it in half

while working.

BODY

Light pink thread.

Round1: 2 ch and 6 sc into first ch (6 sts)

R2: (inc) X 6 (12 sts)

R3: (1sc,inc) X 6 (18 sts)

R4: (2sc,inc) X 6 (24 sts)

R5: (3sc,inc) X 6 (30 sts)

R6: (4sc,inc) X 6 (36 sts)

R7: (5sc,inc) X 6 (42 sts)

Our circle resembles a hexagon now. Now make a circular bottom from an old

plastic card – outline the hexagon with a pencil and cut it out with a little less

diameter.

R8: Make single crochets perpendicular to the previous round – you should work

not in the top of the stitch but around the post of the single crochet; insert the hook

perpendicular to the surface of the circle. (42 sts)

R9-10 (2 rounds): sc around (42 sts)

R11: (5sc,dec) X 6 (36 sts)

R12-14 (3 rounds): sc around (36 sts)

R15: (4sc,dec) X 6 (30 sts)

R16-18 (3 rounds): sc around (30 sts)

R19: (3sc,dec) X 6 (24 sts)

After round 19 place the circle inside!

R20-22 (3 rounds): sc around (24 sts)

R23: (2sc,dec) X 6 (18 sts)

R24-26 (3 rounds): sc around (18 sts)

R27: (1sc,dec) X 6 (12 sts)

R28-29 (2 rounds): sc around (12 sts)

Stuff the finished “cone” with filler rather tightly with the ends of the scissors. (I

got a 4cm (1,6 in) high “cone”).

Now sew the head to the body neatly in imperceptible stitches and be attentive! –

sew the bottom part of the head; top part is worse looking (it will be covered with

hair and a hat). Seam approximately between 2nd and 3rd rounds of the head. Use a

beige thin thread like embroidery floss – it slides well and doesn’t get stuck.

The bottom of the “cone” is not flat and the body doesn’t stand straight. To

solve this problem, wet the bottom a little and stand it to dry on an even surface

while you are working the other pieces.

ARM (make 2)

Thread:

Beige

Light lilac

The arms are easy to make but this work takes a lot of accuracy. If you don’t

manage on the first attempt, It 's okey. I recommend to make 1-2 arms for training

first and then start the actual pieces.

Make both arms at the same time: make one step for one arm and then repeat the

same step for the other arm right away. It is easier to make them similar this way.

Prepare 2 pieces of wire 10cm (4 in) long.

Wrap beige thread around 2 fingers 10 times and tie it tightly in the middle. Cut at

other side.

Fold in half so that the knot is at the place of fold, then put the wire around the

bunch of threads at a 3-4mm (~0,15 in) distance from the knot (that would be the

hand and the wrist) twist the ends of the wire together. The wire should be twisted

very tightly at the wrist.

Cut the bunch of threads diagonally (not straight!) at a 3cm (1,2 in) distance from

the wired wrist.

Now take lilac thread, leave a long tail, place it along the bunch up to the wrist, and

start to wrap the thread around the arm (a little above the wire of the wrist) very

tightly and neatly, placing the wraps side by side. That will be a lilac sleeve.

When you reach the end of beige threads, tie the lilac thread very tightly in knot,

leave long tails.

Then repeat the step with lilac thread again – the sleeve would be wrapped with lilac

thread twice. Tie the ends very tightly.

Cut off the wire, leaving 1 cm (0,4 in) long tails.

The length of arms should be ~3,5cm(1,4 in)

(if the body is 4cm(1,6 in) high)

Attaching the arms (the most important step):

Find spots for the arms – 3 rounds down from the neckline on both sides of the

body. Mark with pins.

Widen the chosen spot – the hole – with the crochet hook. Insert the end of arm's

wire in the hole. Insert the tapestry needle in the same hole, thread the long pink

threads in this needle. Pull the needle with threads on the other side.

Pull the tail of threads to deepen the arm in the body. Do not cut the tail off!

Then sew the arm to the body around the shoulder very carefully and neatly with a

sewing needle and embroidery floss – in very small and imperceptible stitches.

When the arm is sewed, pull the tail of threads and cut it off.

Set the other arm in the same way.

BLUEBELL HAT

(It consist of corolla and calyx)

Corolla:

Dark lilac thread.

Round1: 2 ch and 5 sc into first ch (5 sts)

R2: (inc) X 5 (10 sts)

R3: (1sc,inc) X 5 (15 sts)

R4: sc around (15 sts)

R5: (2sc,inc) X 5 (20 sts)

R6-7 (2 rounds): sc around(20 sts)

R8: (3sc,inc) X 5 (25 sts)

R9-10 (2 rounds): sc around(25 sts)

R11: (4sc,inc) X 5 (30 sts)

R12-13 (2 rounds): sc around(30 sts)

R14: (5sc,inc) X 5 (35 sts)

R15-16 (2 rounds) : sc around(35 sts)

R17: (6sc,inc) X 5 (40 sts)

R18: sc around(40 sts), finish with sl st.

Then make triangular peak according to the diagram: R1: 8 sc, 1 ch

R2: 5 sc, dec (6 sts), 1 ch

Decrease

Then move down with 4 sl st along the side of the triangular and start next peak

(total 5 peaks).

When all 5 peaks are finished, crochet its around by stitches according to

the diagram, in sc, dc and sl st. The lowest sl st is maked in the previous 18th row.

Calyx:

Green thread.

Calyx is crocheted according to the diagram: 8 ch, make sc in 7th ch, then make 6

sc around (not in) the long chain; then 1 sl st in 3rd ch from the beginning; (make 4

ch,3 sc, sl st in 3rd previous ch) X 4. Then make again 4 ch, 3 sc, then get around the

"pedicle" that sticks out, and make last st sl in 3rd previous ch. We got a calix with 5

sepals (like a star) and a pedicle sticking out of it in the middle.

Assembly:

Pull the tail (beginning chains) of calyx inside the flower through the central hole.

Then sew the sepals to the flower in small imperceptible stitches.

Put a little bit of filler inside the finished flower hat, place the hat on the doll’s

head, fix with pins and sew it thoroughly to the head by imperceptible stitches.

EYES AND MOUTH

The eyes are embroidered with dark brown 3 strands of embroidery floss between

rounds 8 and 9. The distance between the eyes is 4 crochet stitches. The length of

the eyes is 1 (or 1,5) single crochet . The height of the eyes is 4 sew stitches.

The mouth is embroidered with reddish brown embroidery floss between round 5

and 6, in 3 stitches.

You can choose the size, the placement of

the eyes and mouth at your taste.

The higher the forehead is

and the bigger the distance between the eyes

is the younger the doll looks (like a baby).

Also you can embroider the eyebrows

to outline the doll’s character.

SMALL BLUEBELL FLOWER

Small corolla:

Dark lilac thread.

Round1: 2 ch and 5 sc into first ch (5 sts)

R2: (inc) X 5 (10 sts)

R3-5 (3 rounds): sc around (10 sts)

R6: (1sc,inc) X 5 (15 sts)

R7-8 (2 rounds): sc around(15 sts), finish with sl st.

R9: make 5 triangular peaks according to the diagram: 4ch, 1sl st, 1sc, 1 dc, sl st in

4th sc (from the beginning peak) previous round.

Assembly:

Thread:

Light yellow

Green

Make filament from light yellow thread – tie a long piece of thread around 2 short

pieces. You got 5 filaments. Pull the long tail through the central hole of the flower.

Prepare 12 cm (4,7 in) piece of wire, pass it through some loops of the flower's

center, fold in half and twist together to form the stem.

Yellow thread tail hang down along the wire.

Now take green thread and start to wrap it around the stem tightly, placing the

wraps side by side as you did for the arm.

When you wrap around 1 cm (0,4 in) of stem, cut yellow thread off.

When you wrap around 5 cm (2 in) of stem in total, tie the ends of the threads tightly

in knot.

Cut the wire off at a distance of 2-3mm (0,1 in) from the knot, bend the wire upward

and press it hard to the stem. We do it not to let the wraps slide off the stem.

Cut the threads at a 5mm (0,2 in) distance from the knot and apply glue stick to the

ends.

Now you can give flower to the girl – and your Bluebell Fairy is ready!)
